Frequent Questions

Q. How does the therapy process work?
A. Therapy is the Greek word for healing. Healing takes courage, commitment, hard work and a willingness to change. Therapy helps you explore your feelings and thoughts. Dr. Toler works with you to make observations and gain insight, as well as develop ideas and strategies for new ways to approach difficulties. You, in turn, must be willing to honestly explore your own feelings and thoughts and to try new approaches in order for change to occur.

Q. What are the risks in therapy?
You may learn things about yourself that you won't like. Often, growth cannot occur until you experience and confront the issues causing you to feel sadness, sorrow, anxiety or pain. You are responsible for the lifestyle choices and changes that may result from therapy. Specifically, one risk of marital therapy is the possibility you will decide to divorce.

Q. How long will I need therapy?
A. The success of therapy depends on the quality of your efforts with your counseling. The number of sessions needed - each session lasts 50 minutes unless psychological testing is involved - depends on many factors. Ultimately, unless there is a reason to terminate counseling earlier, you decide when you're ready to end therapy.

Q. Is everything I say confidential?
Confidentiality cannot be assured in group, family or couple sessions.
